Are you considering getting dental implants to replace missing teeth in your smile? Without a doubt, implants are considered one of the most effective and aesthetically pleasing smile restoration treatments. However, if you currently have smile alignment issues, or even wore braces in the past, certain myths may influence your decision to seek treatment. Take a look at a few of the most prevalent myths associated with dental implants and braces, along with the real truths every prospective patient should know.

Myth: If you've undergone orthodontic treatment in the past, you can't get a dental implant.

Orthodontic treatment does alter the position of your teeth, but these changes do not always mean every gap in the jawline is consumed by the roots of your teeth. If you have undergone an extraction after orthodontic treatment, you can still obtain a dental implant. Typically, there is no correlation between orthodontic treatment and whether or not a patient is a good candidate for a dental implant procedure.

Myth: Dental implants are not possible if you wear braces.

If you currently wear braces and have a gap in your smile, it is actually better if you go ahead and opt to have a dental implant placed. During orthodontic treatment, dentists often have to place spacers to prevent teeth from shifting into an open site where a tooth was extracted. If you have the dental implant placed, the orthodontic process may actually go more smoothly with no spacers involved.

Myth: Clear orthodontic aligners are the only orthodontic option if you've got an implant.

Clear aligners are a good option for many patients with smile alignment issues. However, you can obtain just about any type of orthodontic treatment if you have a dental implant already in place. Therefore, you can possibly opt for either clear aligners or standard metal braces. The orthodontic process is simply designed around the dental implant, which will not shift and move like your natural teeth.

Myth: You can't get a dental implant if your teeth are not aligned.

One final myth that gets passed around quite often is that you are not a good candidate for a dental implant if you suffer from certain smile alignment issues. This myth, however, has no truth behind it. As long as there is room in your jawline for the dental implant to be placed and you meet other standard medical criteria, you may be a good candidate.
